Job Description As Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Nazarbayev University, the appointee will report to the Dean of the School of Engineering and will be responsible for: Leadership providing academic leadership within the Department in all aspects of its operation to ensure that the mission, aims and objectives of the Department are met within the overall context of the School and University; managing the overall performance of the Department in line with the agreed strategy and key performance indicators; monitoring the progress of the Department against agreed objectives and targets identifying actions to encourage continuous development, with other colleagues as appropriate; leading, inspiring, developing and managing all staff reporting into the Chair. Research ensuring the conduct of the highest-quality research by all levels of academic faculty, to the required volume, in accordance with the research strategy; ensuring the delivery of a high standard of research supervision; leading and pursuing his/her own programme of research as appropriate. Internal / External Engagement leading the Department to develop and maintain active networks, internally and externally, nationally and internationally; leading the Department’s endeavours in consultancy, in contract research relationships with commerce and industry, and in other external relationships including those with international collaborators, with professional and practitioner bodies, with policy communities, and with government agencies. Teaching & Programme Development/Management working closely with the Director of Studies in development and delivery of a robust and effective Department teaching and learning strategy that supports the School and University strategy and in programme and curriculum development as best serves the goals of the School and the Department; contributing to the taught programmes of the Department as appropriate; ensuring efficient management and operation of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including programme design and development, compliance with review and validation procedures, overall management of delivery, assessment and student recruitment and admission. Departmental Management delivering efficient and effective financial management and use of resources; overseeing the recruitment of faculty staff as the Department grows to steady state; representing the Department on senior University committees and externally, as appropriate. The Chair of Department may be asked to carry out such other duties and responsibilities the Provost or Dean of the School may from time-to-time prescribe. As Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the appointee will also be responsible for: overseeing the work of the undergraduate, Masters and PhD programme directors; building capacity across all programmes and overseeing the significant growth of the department; developing and recruiting new faculty members in line with growth; implementing change sensitively and diplomatically when required. Person specification Candidates for the role of the Chair of Department at Nazarbayev University much have the following experience, skills, qualification and attributes: Earned doctorate; demonstrable leadership and an international reputation in his/her field of research; strong strategic skills; a collegiate approach with the ability to foster the strategic ambitions of others; financial acumen and proven managerial ability; strong communication and interpersonal skills; significant experience of academic and administrative leadership and management at senior level; relevant experience of and commitment to programme and curriculum development along with a strong personal record of delivering taught programmes; demonstrable ability to motivate and build morale and team spirit; ability to promote the aims of the Department to the academic community within and across the School and Nazarbayev University, and externally to international funding bodies and relevant organisation; capacity to work in partnership on research and development issues. As Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the appointee should also demonstrate: experience as a full professor or equivalent at a leading institution; a flexible and dynamic leadership style which can easily adapt to change; Previous experience in a formal managerial role. Research accomplishment in Petrochemical Engineering to relate closely to the petrochemical industry in Kazakhstan;
